Making the Most of Maternity Leave in HRM

I am not one to stay home. Ask my aunt and uncle who have a running joke that I must be sick if they don't see my car leave at some point throughout the day. Even on maternity leave, I frequently left the house on a daily basis, it's just how I roll.

So, if you're wanting to get out of the house with your new baby, here are my top suggestions

Parent and Tot Swims or Lessons. I am pretty confident every public pool around has these, so choose the one that works for you. Sackville Sports Stadium has a play and splash program where there's a playgroup in a multipurpose room and then a parent tot swim, and it's FREE.

Not just you and a newborn?

If you're home with older siblings as well and wondering what you're going to do that is suitable for both kids, here is my list of go to's when I was home with two.

Wee Wild Ones program at the Natural History Museum

Kindermusic mixed age group at Joyful Sounds Music Studio

Drop in Play Time at PACT

Preschool Indoor Playground in Sackville

Drop in Playgroup at Evangel Church in Cole Harbour

Free Forest School in HRM

Indoor Playgrounds (The Playbox is by far our favorite for a quiet morning)

Welcome Wednesdays at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

HRM rec programs. They often have family drop in programs during the week or toddler programs like Messy Art Play, which was a pretty big hit with my oldest.

Toddler Time at Get Air. I just put the baby in a carrier so I could follow the big guy around. I DID NOT jump with an infant..just to be clear!

Cole Harbour Heritage Farm

When I was home with two I also had memberships to the Shubenacadie Wild Life Park and the Natural History Museum. This allowed us an indoor and outdoor adventure whenever the mood struck us and it was nice to be able to go at your own time and pace instead of trying to make it for the start of a program sometimes.

If the new Discovery Centre was open when I was off with both kids, I probably would have considered a membership there. The top floor is AMAZING for kids and would have been a fantastic place to hang our for a morning.

AND if I wasn't feeling that adventurous or social, I often headed to a walking trail, a local playground, the beach, a coffee shop, the library (they have some really great little play spaces), or just for a drive. There is something calming about a drive with your choice of music and beverage, and possibly a sleeping baby in the back seat.

Not only are these places and activities great for just getting out of the house and expending the kids energy in new places, but it's a really great way to meet local moms with kids the same age as yours. Many of the families we met at these places we've seen again at soccer or baseball and school. I also think it was vital for me to get out and get fresh air, have a reason to put on clean yoga pants, and interact with people who could talk back to me, even if that was just the guy at the Tim Hortons drive thru.

Did I miss any of your favourite maternity leave adventures?

  1. I actually used to meet with a seniors group at my local Tim's. They didn't get much time ,if any with their grandkids and so they'd play pass the baby (or toddler as she grew) and I got some great grown up chat time about a variety of topics that so many seniors have a special knack for!

8 Days of Thanksgiving with Kids

I love Thanksgiving. I love the weather, I love the food, and I love the time with family with no expectation of gifts. I have recently felt that Thanksgiving is becoming more and more about meals, the big dinner, and decorations and less about reflecting on what we have. I personally feel we are losing the part about recognizing how blessed we are and how thankful we should be for what and who we have in our lives. This year I want to start a tradition with the kids that allow them to show thanks for the many things they have to be thankful for. So Starting October 1st the kids and I will be recognizing our thankfulness everyday until Thanksgiving. Here is our plan: Day 1: Thankful for Toys We have a lot of toys, many that the kids do not play with nearly as much as they should. So, I could get them to go through their toys and choose some to donate, but our elf Hermie generally asks them to do that. So for them to demonstrate that they are thankful for their toys I am going...

11 Local Gift Ideas for Mom this Year

Mother's Day is just around the corner, and as a graphic circulating social media reminded me, there are no daycare and school crafts coming home this year. With our new social distancing regulations, many people, me included, don't want to go into a store "shopping" for a gift idea, and we shouldn't. So I searched for some ideas that would work within the current regulations, while also supporting some local business who are catering to this ever changing situation. In no particular order, here are my current Mother's day suggestions. March Break Staycation with Social Distancing

This March break is certainly stacking up to be significantly different from those in the past. Plans are changing by the hour and we are doing our best to not panic, keep breathing, and go with the flow as much as we can. Yesterday when I made the final decision to cancel our trip to Ottawa, I started to plan a staycation that would limit our social interaction with groups. So here is my current plan on how I am going to spend March Break with my kids. We s tocked up on dollar store craft kits. I am pretty sure we bought every craft kit that they had that was age appropriate for a 4 and 6 year old. I am going to finally sign up for Disney + and start getting them ready for what I hope to be their big March break trip next year. We are going to create and follow a routine as much as we can. My kids do best when there is a routine and they can predict what is coming next. Daily Routine Wake Up: Breakfast, Dressed, down time.  Structured Activity: ...
