35 Thoughtful Christmas Gifts for your Husband

Full Disclosure here for a minute. Since having kids, my spouse and I rarely buy each other Christmas gifts. We just felt that our christmas budget was better spent focused on them as opposed to us. My joy certainly comes from giving and watching my kids experience the magic of the season. However, we have sometimes broken our rule of no gift giving, and prior to kids we did purchase for one another. This year, we feel we are in a better situation to add a little bit to our budget and allow for small gifts for one another.
So without further ado, here are my favourite spouse gifts.
  1. Date Calendar: Buy or make a calendar. For each month of the calendar, choose a day to have a date with your spouse. Either purchase the gift card for that date prior to giving the gift, or just write the date in knowing it’s preplanned for that day.
  1. 12 days of Christmas: Starting on December 12th you can hide or place a gift under the tree for him to open that day. These gifts could be really small, or clues to a larger gift, or even follow the numbers in the song. The year I did this, I had gifts like a favourite treat, a gift card to buy his lunch out that day, lottery tickets, beer, etc.
  1. Desk Calendar: I often use vista print to make photo calendars for gifts. One of my favourite calendar options they have is the triangle desk top one. I was able to create a small calendar that won’t take up much space on his desk at work with 12 different pictures of our family. That way he’s not looking at the same picture in a frame on his desk all the time.
  1. Tickets to a sporting event
  2. Tickets to a concert
  3. A Date Night at Home jar/box: Think snacks, drinks, take out, games, ice cream kits, recipes and ingredients to try, a new video game to play together...so many options!
  4. Rent Ice time at the rink: He can either get his buddies together for a game of pickup hockey, or he can make it a family affair.
  5. Custom Keychains: I’ve used Etsy for these before as well. There are some amazing ideas on pinterest for sayings. My favourite “Drive safe, I need you home with me”
  6. Custom Golf Accessories: On Etsy you can get customized ball markers, golf towels, club covers, etc.
  7. Favourite Sport Team Apparel: Bonus if you get him and the kids (human or fur) matching gear to wear together.
  8. An ornament to represent something big that happened in the last year
  9. Green fees: Indoor/outdoor, 9 holes, 18 holes, mini putt….with my golf loving husband, any of those would do!
  10. A Secret Getaway: Who doesn’t love a night away with their spouse? Ryan and I love surprising each other with getaways. Sometimes we don’t tell each other where we are going until we are on the road! Don’t have the funds to go out of town. Ship the kids off for a slumber party somewhere and have your own relaxing evening at home.
  11. A Travel Book to a place you want to go
  12. Framed Bucket Lists. If you don’t have any bucket lists, buy him the book 1000 places to see before you die, a nice pen, a fancy drink for two, a treat, and make it an at home date jar!
  13. Something special about where you first met: For one of our first dates, we went for a walk at a local trail system, but not one we were familiar with. Ryan led us astray and we were lost for quite sometime and ended up coming out a distance from our car, so I once gave him a framed map of that trail system.
  14. Outdoor Wear: If you have kids, make sure he has the necessary outdoor wear to play with them in the snow. Hats, waterproof mittens, snow pants, boots, winter coat, etc. you could even wrap this up with a snowball maker or a snowman kit. Same goes if your kids are of the fur variety. Throw in an outdoor pooch toy to make it more fun.
  15. A watch, and then you can gift him a watch battery for every occasion after that…..
  16. Remote control something….car, helicopter, drone, dinosaur…
  17. A Basket of his Favourite Treats
  18. A Magazine Subscription
  19. Travel Necessities
  20. Date Jar for Dad and a kid: I love spending one on one time with my kids, and so does dad. So grab a mason jar and some gift cards, and start planning a dad and son or dad and daughter dates.
  21. A Date night out jar: When you’re planning this date night out jar, think about a date that he would love. So if I was making a jar for my hubby, I might include a sushi gift card with chopsticks and a lock and key with an escape room gift card. He would LOVE this date….I would love being out with him.
  22. Plan a Boys Night Out for your husband and his buddies
  23. Brewery Tour
  24. Scratch Map to showcase where you have travelled together
  25. Scuba Diving lessons
  26. Rock Climbing
  27. Ski Passes
  28. Nordic Fest Tickets
  29. Check out his closet and dresser, what needs to be replaced? What could use an upgrade?
  30. A massage
  31. Car Detailing
  32. Craft Beer: You can make growlers look like really cute reindeers
Whenever I get really stuck with what to get my husband for an occasion, I always look at his bucket list. What could I get him to help check that thing off his list.
Can we actually go and do the bucket list item?
Can I get him a book so he can learn about it and we can start planning on how to check it off?
Can I get him lessons so he can learn how to do something on his list?
Don’t have a bucket list? Make it a date night!
Did I miss any of your favourite gifts to give to your spouse?

8 Days of Thanksgiving with Kids

I love Thanksgiving. I love the weather, I love the food, and I love the time with family with no expectation of gifts. I have recently felt that Thanksgiving is becoming more and more about meals, the big dinner, and decorations and less about reflecting on what we have. I personally feel we are losing the part about recognizing how blessed we are and how thankful we should be for what and who we have in our lives. This year I want to start a tradition with the kids that allow them to show thanks for the many things they have to be thankful for. So Starting October 1st the kids and I will be recognizing our thankfulness everyday until Thanksgiving. Here is our plan: Day 1: Thankful for Toys We have a lot of toys, many that the kids do not play with nearly as much as they should. So, I could get them to go through their toys and choose some to donate, but our elf Hermie generally asks them to do that. So for them to demonstrate that they are thankful for their toys I am going...

11 Local Gift Ideas for Mom this Year

Mother's Day is just around the corner, and as a graphic circulating social media reminded me, there are no daycare and school crafts coming home this year. With our new social distancing regulations, many people, me included, don't want to go into a store "shopping" for a gift idea, and we shouldn't. So I searched for some ideas that would work within the current regulations, while also supporting some local business who are catering to this ever changing situation. In no particular order, here are my current Mother's day suggestions. March Break Staycation with Social Distancing

This March break is certainly stacking up to be significantly different from those in the past. Plans are changing by the hour and we are doing our best to not panic, keep breathing, and go with the flow as much as we can. Yesterday when I made the final decision to cancel our trip to Ottawa, I started to plan a staycation that would limit our social interaction with groups. So here is my current plan on how I am going to spend March Break with my kids. We s tocked up on dollar store craft kits. I am pretty sure we bought every craft kit that they had that was age appropriate for a 4 and 6 year old. I am going to finally sign up for Disney + and start getting them ready for what I hope to be their big March break trip next year. We are going to create and follow a routine as much as we can. My kids do best when there is a routine and they can predict what is coming next. Daily Routine Wake Up: Breakfast, Dressed, down time.  Structured Activity: ...
